Hybrid Electric benefits

Why Hybrid Electric technology is a smart choice

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) combine the power of petrol engines with the efficiency of electric motors. While the motor directly powers the wheels, the petrol engine automatically turns on to support heavy acceleration and high-speed cruising. This means small trips under a speed of 50km/h might not use any petrol (dependent on driving style).
A winning combination

Toyota HEVs combine the best qualities of electric motors and petrol engines to create a vehicle that doesn’t compromise performance.

More peace of mind

Toyota Hybrid Electric Vehicles offer superb fuel economy. You’ll go further and last longer between refills, so don’t be afraid to plan those longer road trips.

Effortless acceleration

Unlike standalone petrol engines, electric motors provide full power in an instant. This means Toyota Hybrid Electric Vehicles have impressive acceleration for a controlled, efficient take-off.

Charges while you drive

There’s no need to plug in a Toyota Hybrid Electric Vehicle. During deceleration or braking, energy from the internal petrol combustion engine is captured, converted into electricity and stored in the batteries.

Electric in EV Mode

Toyota Hybrid Electric Vehicles allow you to drive using electric power under certain conditions. EV Mode disengages the petrol engine unless it’s needed.

Reduced tailpipe emissions

Through intelligent switching and using less petrol, you reduce the creation of CO2 and other harmful gasses usually emitted from a petrol car’s tailpipe.

Owning a Toyota Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Hybrid Electric ownership in Australia is no more complicated than owning a conventional vehicle. You’ll enjoy the same benefits, plus more.
5-year Toyota Hybrid Electric traction battery warrantyW1

We’ll increase the standard five-year warranty on your new Hybrid Electric traction battery to up to 10 years as long as you undertake your annual inspection as part of routine maintenance according to the vehicle logbook.

Capped price servicing

Just like every other Toyota, Hybrid Electric Vehicles qualify for fixed-price servicingT1 for up to your first three or five years on the road, depending on vehicle model.

Long-lasting batteries

Our Hybrid Electric traction batteries are smart, robust and backed by decades of research, expertise and high-quality Toyota engineering.
Easy recharging

There’s no need to rely on charging stations as the vehicle’s internal petrol combustion engine will charge it for you as you drive.

Money back

When you return your old Hybrid Electric traction battery and purchase a new one, we will recycle components of it and give you a cash rebate.

Battery recycling

We’re developing strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle components of vehicle batteries locally. In FY 2022, we incentivised Toyota and Lexus customers to recycle 1,954 hybrid batteries.

FAQs

How does a hybrid vehicle work?

Hybrid Electric Vehicles combine the efficiency of petrol engines with the instant torque of electric motors, giving you more range, and more excitement in every drive. HEVs bolsters the power generated by the petrol engine with the instant torque of the electric motors while also recharging their batteries by recapturing energy being created by the petrol engine.

What is a Hybrid Electric car?

A Hybrid Electric car is a vehicle that sits at the crossroads of the present and future. Combining both petrol engine technology together with batteries and electric motors to generate more power and increase efficiency on both ends.

How long does a Hybrid Electric traction battery last and how long is it covered for?

The life of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle and a Hybrid Electric traction battery varies based on usage and environmental factors. For HEVs bought before 1 January 2019, you’ll get eight years or 160,000km of coverage for your Hybrid Electric traction battery from the date of first delivery. For HEVs bought after 1 January 2019, you’ll get up to 10 years of coverage for your Hybrid Electric traction battery, provided you undertake your annual inspection as part of routine maintenance as suggested by the vehicle logbook.

What’s the difference between a Hybrid & Plug in Hybrid Vehicle?

Unlike a Hybrid Electric Vehicle which charges its battery by recapturing the energy produced by the petrol engine, a Plug In Hybrid Vehicle maintains the self-charging capability of a HEV while allowing users to charge the battery via a public charging station or a home charger.
