Apple CarPlay®1 and Android Auto™1: What's in it for you?

Apple CarPlay®1 and Android Auto™1 help you access some of your favourite phone apps on your vehicle's touchscreen display. And, as this technology is relatively new, it’s only natural people want to understand what it is and how it works. So here we cover the basic features, along with how to get it installed in selected Toyota vehicles.

What does Apple CarPlay®1 offer?

For iPhone users, trusty Siri® already provides shortcuts through simple voice commands. This technology can be invaluable on the road.

In just a few words, you can make or return calls, and listen to voicemail messages. You can also have messages read through your car’s speakers, and send messages too. For example, a simple “Hey Siri, tell Mum I’ll be there in 10 minutes,” and your message is on its way.

CarPlay®1 plays all your favourite tunes too. Choose music from your Apple Music® subscription, iTunes library or other music apps, by letting Siri® know what you want to hear. It’s like having your own personal DJ on hand 24/7.

If you use your car for work, the Calendar will come in handy. Keep track of your meetings, with your day read out to you, as you keep your eyes on the road. And to get you from A to B smoothly, you can choose your favourite navigation app.

What does Android Auto™1 offer?

As the name suggests, Android Auto™1 connects your in-car system to your Android™1 phone. Making and receiving calls, or sending messages and having them read out to you is as easy as an “OK Google, call Tim” or “OK Google, let Sarah know I’ll be home for dinner.”

Music is only a voice command away too. Play your favourite tunes through apps like Spotify, and with Google Assistant a quick “OK Google, play Bohemian Rhapsody” will have you singing along in no time, with your hands on the wheel. And when you need to get more serious, you can have your work schedule read out to you too.

Of course, Google Maps™1,2 is at your beck and call, with updates on traffic hazards, fastest routes and snack stops.

Can I get Apple CarPlay®1 or Android Auto1 installed in my Toyota vehicle?

Upgrades are currently available for selected Toyota vehicles. See here for more details.

Installation is free on 2019 RAV4 and HiAce purchased before 1 November 2019. It’s also available as a $199 (inc GST) upgrade on selected Corolla Hatch, Camry and Prius models. If you have one of these models, myToyota is a convenient way to book your upgrade.

Simply register or log into myToyota, then:

  1. Add your Toyota
  2. In Garage, select ‘Book a service’
  3. In Accessories, select ‘Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ upgrade’
  4. Complete booking

Where does it get installed

At your preferred Dealer, which you select when you book through myToyota.

How long does installation take?

Approximately one hour, but please check with your Dealer. Depending on their work schedule, you may need to make your vehicle available for a longer period.

Will Apple CarPlay®1 or Android Auto™1 be available in new Toyota models?

Both Apple CarPlay®1 or Android Auto™1 have been fitted to all new Toyota HiAce, Corolla HB, Prius, Camry & RAV4 from the 1st of November 2019. They will also be fitted to the All-New Corolla Sedan from the 21st of November 2019 and the All-New Granvia has them as standard from the 14th of October 2019.The All-New C-HR coming out in December will have them as standard, along with the All-New Yaris, launching in mid-2020.
